Several homes with celebrity cachet — current and historical — have hit the market this summer. But a famous seller does not mean these properties are immune to price drops. Several homes have had to slash their asking prices on more than one occasion.
Meanwhile, some A-listers are trying their luck on the rental market, offering up their homes for just a month or the whole season.
Here’s a look at what some newsmakers are doing with their East End abodes.
For the entertainer

TV chef Rachael Ray has relisted her Southampton home for $4.5 million, a $400,000 cut from its initial asking price of $4.9 million in August 2017. Built in 1976, the estate sits on more than 6 acres on two separate lots that are adjacent to the Southampton Golf Club. Three en-suite bedrooms are included in the 3,000-square-foot residence, and naturally, in addition to the gourmet kitchen, there’s a staging kitchen in the four-room pool house. Bernie Madoff’s former Montauk beach house is on the market for a cool $21 million. The current owners are Vornado CEO Steven Roth and his wife, Tony Award-winning producer Daryl Roth. The 3,000-square-foot house sits along 180 feet of the Atlantic and was renovated by designer Thierry Despont. It offers three bedrooms, three baths and a two-story great room with a 30-foot-high stone fireplace. A gunite pool with a cabana is a recent addition. Down the street from the Roth home, real estate investor Michael Hirtenstein has put his modern, 4-acre compound on the market, also for $21 million. The estate includes two oceanfront parcels with two buildings designed by noted architect James Biber of Biber Architects and Pentagram Design. The buildings — a 5,500-square-foot main residence and 2,400-square-foot guest house — received the 2006 AIA New York State Design Awards Citation for Design and the 2007 American Architecture Award for Distinguished Buildings. The 25-acre estate of former NBC “Today” show anchor Matt Lauer — ousted from his morning perch following allegations of sexual misconduct — saw another price cut this spring of $2.1 million, bringing the asking price down to $12.75 million from $18 million in 2016. Lauer bought the then-new 8,000-square-foot Sag Harbor home in 2004. It has six bedrooms, six full baths, two half-baths, a heated pool and a tennis court. This cottage in Water Mill that once belonged to comedic talent Mel Brooks and his Academy Award-winning wife Anne Bancroft is on the market for just under $12 million. The 2,000-square-foot oceanfront house includes three bedrooms and three baths, a wood-burning fireplace and a pool. The couple bought the home in 2000 for $3 million; Brooks sold it for $5.3 million in 2010, five years after his wife died. Brown Harris Stevens’ Mary Ann Cinelli has the listing.
Broadway moves east
34 Darby Lane and 59 Georgica Road, East Hampton
These two houses, designed by Alexander Gorlin, named one of Architectural Digest’s top 100 architects, sit on adjoining plots over more than 3 acres. The one at 59 Georgica was once home to legendary Broadway lyricist Adolph Green and his Tony-winning wife, actress Phyllis Newman. The combined properties, with a total of 9,148 square feet, have an asking price of $11.8 million but can also be purchased separately, according to 27 East. The 7,200-square-foot Bridgehampton estate of renowned ballerina Sono Osato is on the market for $37 million. Built in 1917, the 4-acre waterfront property has only had one owner aside from Osato. The princely asking price includes five bedrooms, each with a fireplace, along with six full and two partial baths, a heated pool and a tennis court. The 3,300-square-foot waterfront home of fashion icon China Machado, who died in 2016, is for sale for $9.8 million. Machado was one of the first non-Caucasian models to appear in major American fashion magazines. She was the muse of photographer Richard Avedon, who is said to have called her “probably one of the most beautiful women in the world.” She worked and socialized with the likes of Hubert de Givenchy, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Pablo Picasso, William Holden and Diana Vreeland. Located in North Haven, just north of Sag Harbor, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home features Machado’s paintings and murals. A wall of pink rose bushes leads to the beach. Composer and conductor Marvin Hamlisch, chef and author Anna Pump and football commentator Gene Washington all lived in this Sag Harbor house at one point or another. It’s now owned by Noble Black of Douglas Elliman, regularly listed as one of the top real estate brokers in New York City by The Real Deal, and his husband, lawyer Marc Rozic. The $3.4 million house, built in the 1840s, has been renovated by John Bjørnen. Currently configured with four bedrooms, a library and three full baths, the house also offers six working fireplaces and water views from every room. The $1.38 million East Hampton home of makeup artist Matin Maulawizada — whose clients include Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Cynthia Nixon — is on the market. Maulawizada owns the home with Mike Serdiouk; together they founded Afghan Hands, a nonprofit that supports disadvantaged and disenfranchised women in Afghanistan. The 1,677-square-foot home sits on nearly an acre in the Northwest Woods. The three-bedroom, three-bath home comes with a heated pool, 1,000-square-foot mahogany deck and eight large skylights. 120 Beach Lane, Wainscott
Mickey Drexler, the CEO of J. Crew, recently sold his 3,500-square-foot Wainscott mansion for $15 million. He had listed it for $26.5 million back in 2014, but it hadbeen on and off the market with numerous price cuts since then. It last relisted in November for $17.95 million. The 2.3-acre property includes three bedrooms and 315 feet of ocean frontage. Douglas Elliman’s Paul Brennan handled the sale.

ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos and his actress wife, Ali Wentworth, have found a buyer for their gated Southampton estate after dropping $1 million from its 2016 asking price. Listed at a hair under $6 million, the six-bedroom mansion sits on nearly 1.5 acres and has a media room with a wet bar, a 1,000-bottle wine cellar, a tennis court and a pool. Marilyn Monroe and husband No. 3, Arthur Miller, stayed in this converted building, known at the Windmill House, in 1957. It’s now for rent for $55,000 from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The New York Post reported that the actress prepped for her role in the film “Some Like It Hot” while the couple stayed there. The newly renovated property, which was built in the 1800s, has 1,300 square feet on three floors, with two bedrooms and one bath set on nearly 5.5 acres. The Southampton estate of“Real Housewives of New York” star Ramona Singer is listed for $165,000 for August to Labor Day. The 7,000-square-foot mansion has six bedrooms, five and a half baths, a professional kitchen and a heated pool, plus tennis and bocce courts. The house was apparently where her ex-husband, Mario Singer, carried on his highly publicized affair with socialite Kasey Dexter. Bethenny Frankel, the founder of Skinnygirl Cocktails and one of the original and returning members of the “RHONY” crew, is reportedly renting her Bridgehampton home from as much as $150,000 for the full season to as little as $35,000 for the month of June. Frankel, who also took on the role of real estate maven alongside Fredrik Eklund on Bravo’s “Bethenny and Fredrik” this past winter, bought the 4,000-square-foot house last year and gave it a modern makeover. Dubbed the Morning Glory, the seven-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath home was built in 1910 and has a swimming pool and a family room with a wet bar. Breitenbach of Corcoran has the listing.

Former “RHONY” star Jill Zarin reportedly moved out of her Southampton home last year and is now renting it out for the summer season. The three-story, 6,100-square-foot mansion was built in 2011 and sits on about 1.25 acres of waterfront property. The home has five bedrooms, seven and a half baths, a heated pool and a sauna and steam room, according to the listing. The house is available for $260,000 for the full season, $125,000 for August to Labor Day, $110,000 for July and $50,000 for June. Boyer-Stump of Sotheby’s International Realty has the listing.
